Letter | ?Green energy? vote shows poor judgment on city?s part

Supporting green energy sounds like such a good idea, and if Mercer Island residents want to participate in the PSE?s ?Green Power? program, they certainly can. It is voluntary. For the City Council, however, to spend our money on this program displays a serious lack of judgment and fiscal responsibility, even if the amount is only $6,000.

Here are some of the facts: In 2001 the legislature mandated this program. After 10 years it generates 1.4% of PSE?s sales and has a 2.8% customer participation rate. PSE has 3,000 megawatts of electrical generating capacity. Our electricity comes from the following sources: coal, 36 percent; hydro, 33 percent; natural gas, 29 percent; nuclear, 1 percent; other, 1 percent.

The interesting fact is that PSE currently has three wind facilities producing up to 773 megawatts of electricity. But, PSE sells the excess green energy generated by their wind facilities to other entities across the nation.

So, spending our tax dollars on a program that after 10 years produces little energy ? and based on the participation rate is of little interest to the customer base ? seems like a bad idea, to say nothing of the question, ?Is it the proper role of our city government??

If PSE wants to supply us with more green energy, they can just flip the switch.

I?m not questioning PSE. I?m sure what they are doing makes business sense. But I am questioning the City Council and Bruce Bassett, the mayor who says, ?It is an important thing for us to do.? Between hydro and wind, we could be getting over 50 percent of our power from green energy. The Reporter is right: there are probably better uses for our money. The program terms and conditions say we can withdraw at any time, so let?s get out now.

Douglas Coupland's V-Pole unifies wireless connectivity and EV charging in an LED streetlight

Image

It's still very much a concept, and not something being described as a business venture, but author / designer Douglas Coupland is hoping that his new "V-Pole" design will serve as something of a model for cities looking to build out their technology infrastructure. As you can see, it's a rather nondescript (albeit brightly-colored) pole on the outside, but Coupland sees the inside being packed with an array of the latest technology, including Alcatel-Lucent lightRadios for wireless connectivity (both WiFi and cellular), an LED street light on top, and connections to nearby wireless charging stations for electric vehicles. As for the "V" in the name, that stands for Coupland's home city of Vancouver, which he sees as a natural fit for the pole -- something the city's mayor apparently agrees with.

Top 5 Foods That Make You Hungrier | Buy the Quantum Scale now!

?

Just as they can make you full, foods can make you hungry. We?ve all been through grabbing a bagel on the way out of the house in the morning, only to feel our stomach rumbling again just minutes after. As it turns out all food is not created equal when it comes to making you full.

The more fiber, protein, and water a food contains, the more?satiating it is.?The less fiber, water, and protein a food contains, the hungrier you will feel after eating it.?Satiety is the term defining that feeling that you get when you are full and satisfied after eating.

So here is a list of the top 5 foods that make you hungry instead of keeping you energetic:

1. Diet Soda: You?re probably thinking: ?Surely a zero calorie soda is better than drinking a sugar filled drink?. The truth is artificial?sweeteners found in low-calorie drinks?have been proved to increase appetite and boost sugar cravings over time.

2. French Fries:?Although french fries are considered to be vegetables, they are really just starchy simple carbs, fried, salted, and dipped in high fructose corn syrup (ketchup). With all the salt and carbs, fries will always leave you wishing that you ordered a supersize.

3. Pastries and Baked Goods: Simple carbohydrates such as white flour and white sugar contain zero fiber and minimal nutrients. Also, simple carbs are burned as soon as they are eaten, resulting in a large insulin spike, followed by a sugar crash. This means you?ll be wanting a second breakfast every time. That is why those delicious scrumptious?donuts you had for breakfast feel?like a distant memory just a half hour after they touched your lips.

4. Chinese Takeout:?Chinese takeout is really high in MSG, which is a flavor enhancer added to processed foods to make them more palatable. And guess what? A?side effect of MSG?is increased hunger.

5. Processed Cereals:?Just like the baked goods, cereals can be a high carb breakfast with little long-term energy return. If you really enjoy having cereal for breakfast, go for a whole grain cereal that is rich in fiber, nuts and seeds like?muesli. Make sure to add?fresh fruit to your meal for a filling, nutritious breakfast.

SpaceX Launches Private Capsule on Historic Trip to Space Station

This story was updated at 4:45 a.m. ET.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? A private space capsule called Dragon soared into the predawn sky Tuesday, riding a pillar of flame like its beastly namesake on a history-making trip to the International Space Station.

The unmanned capsule, built by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX), is the first non-governmental spacecraft to launch to the space station, ushering in a new era of partnership between the public and private spaceflight programs.

"I think this is an example of American entrepreneurship at its best," said Alan Lindenmoyer, manager of NASA's commercial crew and cargo program, in a briefing before the launch. About 100 VIP guests were on hand to witness the launch, NASA officials said.?

The Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX launched its Dragon capsule at 3:44 a.m. EDT (0744 GMT) today (May 22) from a pad here at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. It blasted off atop SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, a 157-foot (48-meter) booster powered by nine Merlin rocket engines.?The space station was flying 249 miles above the North Atlantic Ocean as the rocket lifted off, NASA officials said.?[Launch Photos: SpaceX's Dragon Blasts Off for Space Station]

Private spaceship in orbit

The gumdrop-shaped capsule is 14.4 feet tall (4.4 meters) and 12 feet wide (3.7 m), and packed with 1,014 pounds (460 kilograms) of cargo for the space station, including 674 pounds (306 kg) of food and supplies for the crew, as well as student-designed science experiments and a laptop computer.

The Falcon 9 rocket's second stage is also reportedly carrying ashes from 308 people, including actor James Doohan, who played Scotty on the 1960s television series "Star Trek," and Mercury program astronaut Gordon Cooper. The ashes were flown under a deal with the "memorial spaceflight" company Celestis, according to ABC News and Reuters.

The SpaceX launch vehicle is named after the Millennium Falcon of "Star Wars," while the capsule got its moniker from the Peter, Paul and Mary song, "Puff, the Magic Dragon."

Today marked only the second-ever launch of a Dragon capsule, and the third flight for the Falcon 9 rocket. It was the second attempt to launch the space station-bound test flight after a launch try Saturday was thwarted by a faulty rocket engine valve. Repairs were made over the weekend, and the SpaceX team counted down smoothly to the liftoff this morning.

"One thing that they are very good at is being able to work through launch abort and treat those problems and be prepared to go again in a very short time," Mike Horkachuck, NASA project executive for SpaceX, said Monday (May 21).

Today's launch is the last planned test flight for SpaceX under NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program intended to develop a private-sector replacement for the cargo-delivery services of the retired space shuttles. SpaceX has a $1.6 billion contract to fly at least 12 unmanned missions to the space station through 2015.

Musk founded SpaceX in 2002 with the goal of boosting commercial access to space and, ultimately, aiming for deep-space exploration, including missions to Mars. The success of today's launch was never certain or assured, Musk had repeatedly said.

Today, the mission's uncertainty eased up a bit, he said.

"Falcon flew perfectly!!" Musk wrote in a Twitter post from Falcon 9's mission control room in Hawthorne. "Dragon in orbit, comm locked and solar arrays active!! Feels like a giant weight just came off my back."

Orbital catch up

The spacecraft is due to spend its first day on orbit catching up with the 240-mile high (390 km) space station, where it will rendezvous Thursday (May 24) and perform a fly-by to within 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) to check its navigation systems.?[Quiz: How Well Do You Know SpaceX's Dragon?]

On Friday (May 25), the capsule is slated to perform a series of maneuvers to approach the station, with crewmembers onboard the outpost issuing commands to Dragon. If the spacecraft passes a set of "go-no go" checks at Mission Control in Houston, NASA will approve the vehicle to approach the International Space Station. From inside, astronauts Don Pettit and Andre Kuipers will use the lab's robotic arm to grab Dragon and berth it to the station's Harmony node.

The hatches between the two spacecraft are due to be opened early Saturday (May 26), so the crew can enter Dragon and unpack its deliveries.

Dragon is due to spend about a week and a half attached to the outpost. On May 31, the capsule will be packed with completed science experiments and other equipment, unberthed, and sent back toward Earth. The vehicle is equipped with a heat shield to withstand the fires of re-entry, and is due to splash down and be recovered by ship in the Pacific Ocean.

Private spaceflight reality

Dragon is an unmanned version of a capsule ultimately intended to carry people as well.

Another company, Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., also has a NASA contract to deliver cargo to the space station, and plans to launch its first test flight later this year.

The program is part of a larger effort by NASA to outsource low-Earth orbit transportation to the private sector, allowing the space agency to begin work on a new spacecraft and heavy-lift rocket to visit asteroids, the moon and Mars.

The plan has received criticism from some lawmakers and members of the public, who worry that commercial vehicles aren't as safe or reliable as NASA's in-house built spacecraft.

"It's really easy to criticize, and it's very difficult to solve a problem and actually do something," said SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell. "So I tend to focus on the business and getting our jobs done and not focus on those that want to criticize."

NASA officials and leaders of the commercial space sector say the time is right for space to transition from an exclusively government regime to an arena open to private companies.

"I kind of see that transition as being inevitable," said Phil McAlister, NASA's director of Commercial Spaceflight Development. "I believe it is going to happen at some point. If it's not today and this mission falls short of expectations, it is going to happen eventually."

(AP) ? Intent on weakening Iran economically, the Senate on Monday approved tough new penalties on the Tehran regime to thwart its nuclear ambitions.

By voice vote, the Senate backed the measure ahead of talks between leading nations and Iran in Baghdad on Wednesday. The bill would target Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, require companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchange to disclose any Iran-related business to the Securities and Exchange Commission and would expand penalties for energy and uranium mining joint ventures with Tehran.

The bill also would deny visas and freeze assets on individuals and companies that supply Iran with technology that could be used to crack down on its citizens, such as tear gas, rubber bullets and surveillance equipment.

The House passed its version of sanctions legislation in December.

Both the Obama administration and the international community have imposed tough sanctions on Iran over its nuclear development program, which Iran maintains is for peaceful purposes only.

"Any comprehensive policy that seeks to end Iran's effort to acquire a nuclear weapon needs to convince the rulers in Tehran that their survival is in question," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said in a statement. "While sanctions are one part of convincing the Supreme Leader that the costs of pursuing this weapon outweigh any perceived benefit, Senate Republicans insisted that the Senate pass nothing less than the president's commitment that all options are on the table, in order to prevent any contrary perception that silence on the use of force would have created."

Last Thursday, Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the bill, insisting that it include language stating that the use of military force is an option, as Obama has said. Negotiations through the weekend produced a bill that was acceptable to Democrats and Republicans.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., a leading proponent of tough penalties on Iran, said the legislation sends a clear message to Tehran in advance of the talks: "Provide a real and verifiable plan for the complete dismantling of your nuclear weapons program, or Washington will further tighten the economic noose."

Said Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., "Today the U.S. Senate put Iranian leaders on notice that they must halt all uranium enrichment activities or face another round of economic sanctions from the United States."

Last year, the Senate voted 100-0 for a measure sponsored by Menendez and Kirk and added to the annual defense bill that targeted financial institutions that do business with Iran's Central Bank. President Barack Obama signed the wide-ranging defense bill on Dec. 31.

In a rare bipartisan vote in February, the Senate Banking Committee, led by Sens. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., and Richard Shelby, R-Ala., overwhelmingly approved the sanctions. Johnson and Shelby said tougher penalties were necessary to deter Tehran from pursuing a nuclear weapon.

Among the provisions of the legislation is an expansion of U.S. sanctions to include companies involved in joint energy ventures anywhere in the world in which Tehran is a significant partner or investor. The penalties also would apply if Iran receives energy technology or information that wasn't previously available to the government.

Penalties also would be imposed on companies involved in a joint venture with Iran in the mining, production or transportation of uranium. Individuals who agree to abandon such projects within six months would be exempt from the penalties.

The legislation would require the president to identify and designate officials, affiliates and agents of the Revolutionary Guard Corps. These individuals would be subject to sanctions and barred from the United States. Individuals or companies that engage in transactions with the Revolutionary Guard Corps, even through bartering, also would be subject to sanctions.

Penalties also would be mandatory for shippers or insurers who knowingly aid the shipment of materials that contribute to Iran's weapons of mass destruction or terrorism-related activities.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., attempted on March 27 to secure quick approval of the legislation with no amendments, but Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., pushed to add language stating that the bill was not an authorization to use military force. Reid also faced a challenge from Kirk, who pressed for nine additional changes.

The new version of the bill includes elements of amendments that Kirk and Menendez had proposed, including tougher sanctions against companies that engage in or back censorship in Iran.

In a letter to Senate leaders last week, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the powerful pro-Israel lobby, praised the bipartisan legislation and Congress for forcing "Iran's leaders to face the choice between compliance with its international obligations and international opprobrium."

Other issues are certain to be part of a House-Senate conference to produce a final version of the legislation.

In its letter, AIPAC thanked Menendez and Kirk for deferring their amendments to the conference committee to ensure that the legislation moved ahead. It urged Senate leaders to give their proposed changes careful consideration during negotiations with the House.

Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees Dies of Cancer at 62 - NYTimes.com

Robin Gibb, one of the three singing brothers of the Bee Gees, the long-running Anglo-Australian pop group whose chirping falsettos and hook-laden disco hits like ?Jive Talkin? and ?You Should Be Dancing? shot them to worldwide fame in the 1970s, died on Sunday. He was 62.

The cause was complications from cancer and intestinal surgery, his family said in a statement.

Mr. Gibb had been hospitalized for intestinal problems several times in the last two years. Cancer had spread from his colon to his liver, and in the days before his death he contracted pneumonia and fell into a coma.

Mr. Gibb was the second Bee Gee and third Gibb brother to die. His fraternal twin and fellow Bee Gee, Maurice Gibb, died of complications of a twisted intestine in 2003 at 53. The youngest brother, Andy, who had a successful solo career with hits like ?Shadow Dancing,? was 30 when he died of heart failure, in 1988.

With brilliant smiles, polished funk and adenoidal close harmonies, the Bee Gees ? Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb ? were disco?s ambassadors to Middle America in the mid to late 1970s, embodying the peacocked look of the time in their open-chested leisure suits and gold medallions.

They sold well over 100 million albums and had six consecutive No. 1 singles from 1977 to 1979. They were also inextricably tied to the disco era?s defining movie, ?Saturday Night Fever,? a showcase for their music that included the hit ?Stayin? Alive,? its propulsive beat in step with the strut of the film?s star, John Travolta.

But the group, whose first record came out in 1963, had a history that preceded its disco hits, starting with upbeat ditties inspired by the Everly Brothers and the Beatles, then with lachrymose ballads like ?How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.?

Mr. Gibb is survived by his wife, Dwina Murphy; his brother Barry; his sons, Spencer and Robin-John, known as R.J.; his daughters, Melissa and Snow; a sister, Lesley; and his mother. An earlier marriage, to Molly Hullis, ended in divorce.

Make Your D Day Even Special?Hire a Luxury Car

A wedding car hire is certainly as important as the bridesmaids. Do not even let the thought of saving money enter your mind. You are getting married not going into a nunnery. You have to do a luxury car hire for your wedding. Remember you will be the focus of attention. This is your personal history being made. There will be photographs and videos. You are going to live happily ever after. What will your children think if you arrive in your old family sedan?

This is the time to be a princess. You can make an online survey of all the luxury cars available for weddings in your city. Take a stretch limousine if you are going to be riding with your bridesmaids to church. Make a decision which you will not regret ten years later. Some people decide on motorcycle pulled fairy cabs for a ride to the wedding ceremony; it might look cute but it will make you squirm a few years later.

It is always wise to go with the current fashion. Once when people lived in villages and small towns everyone just walked to church. Today Luxury car hire is a big part of wedding planning. Your selection will make a big statement about who you are.

If you are flamboyant and like to attract extraordinary attentions then you can even arrive in a stagecoach driven by six white horses to the accompaniment of ?she?ll be coming round the mountain when she comes.? If you are not that much of an extrovert but really want to make a modern statement then a big white shining SUV will be the right choice. It is all planning. You can decide to arrive in the SUV and then to depart with the groom for your honeymoon in this spectacular wedding car hire choice. If you love the noisy tin cans tied to the back bumper and a big sticker of ?Just Married? then so be it. Someone will have to tie the cans and stick the poster while you are getting married inside the church. There are many choices available in the category of wedding cars. You can hire a vintage car to give that ?olde world? charm to your marriage.

You can arrive like royalty in a horse drawn buggy. You can make a selection depending on your party theme for the wedding day. Decorating the wedding car is also a specialist?s job. Search the net and find out the right decorators. As with everything else in life, your selection will depend on your budget. If you can afford it you can provide transportation for your friends and relatives along with the wedding car. That will make an impressive entourage. If you are more practical than romantic then go for a mini bus. In all cases remember that you are the central figure. Your wedding dress should not be crushed in a small car; your hair-do should not be blown away in an open carriage. In the end the right decision is a wise mixture of practicality and romance.

In a time long before the Mad King's rule, Aegon Targaryen reigned over the land of Westeros with a calm hand. But calm is the last word that would be used to describe the coming events. What part will you play? Will you be a friend to the throne? Or foe?

Drug found for parasite that is major cause of death worldwide

ScienceDaily (May 20, 2012) ? Research by a collaborative group of scientists from UC San Diego School of Medicine, UC San Francisco and Wake Forest School of Medicine has led to identification of an existing drug that is effective against Entamoeba histolytica. This parasite causes amebic dysentery and liver abscesses and results in the death of more than 70,000 people worldwide each year.

Using a high-throughput screen for drugs developed by the research team, they discovered that auranofin -- a drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration 25 years ago for rheumatoid arthritis -- is very effective in targeting an enzyme that protects amebae from oxygen attack (thus enhancing sensitivity of the amebae to reactive oxygen-mediated killing).

The results of the work, led by Sharon L. Reed, MD, professor in the UCSD Departments of Pathology and Medicine and James McKerrow, MD, PhD, professor of Pathology in the UCSF Sandler Center for Drug Discovery, will be published in the May 20, 2012 issue of Nature Medicine.

Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan intestinal parasite that causes human amebiasis, the world's fourth leading cause of death from protozoan parasites. It is listed by the National Institutes of Health as a category B priority biodefense pathogen. Current treatment relies on metronidazole, which has adverse effects, and potential resistance to the drug is an increasing concern.

"Because auranofin has already been approved by the FDA for use in humans, we can save years of expensive development," said Reed. "In our studies in animal models, auranofin was ten times more potent against this parasite than metronidazole."

In a mouse model of amebic colitis and a hamster model of amebic liver abscess, the drug markedly decreased the number of parasites, damage from inflammation, and size of liver abscesses.

"This new use of an old drug represents a promising therapy for a major health threat, and highlights how research funded by the National Institutes of Health can benefit people around the world," said Reed. The drug has been granted "orphan-drug" status (which identifies a significant, newly developed or recognized treatment for a disease which affects fewer than 200,000 persons in the United States) and UC San Diego hopes to conduct clinical trials in the near future.

Additional contributors to the study include first author Anjan Debnath, Shamila S. Gunatilleke and James H. McKerrow, UCSF Sandler Center for Drug Discovery; Derek Parsonage and Leslie B. Poole, Wake Forest School of Medicine; Rosa M. Andrade, Chen He, Eduardo R. Cobo and Ken Hirata, UC San Diego School of Medicine; Steven Chen and Michelle R. Arkin, UCSF; Guillermina Garc?a-Rivera, Esther Orozco and M?ximo B. Mart?nez, Instituto Polit?cnico Nacional, Mexico City; and Amy M. Barrios, University of Utah, Salt Lake City.

This work was supported by the Sandler Foundation and US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases grant 5U01AI077822-02, with additional support from R01 GM050389.

From cancer to quantum, teens? scientific feats celebrated

PITTSBURGH ? New ways to detect cancer, search online social networks and link atoms using quantum physics took the highest honors this week at the 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh.

The event, which is the world?s largest international precollege science fair, brought 1,549 finalists to the Steel City. Over the course of a week, students presented their research to a stream of judges, reporters and members of the public. Winners divvied up more than $3 million in awards, including a top prize of $75,000 announced during a May 18 ceremony. Society for Science & the Public, or SSP, runs the competition.

?As a group, you are a force for profound good,? SSP president and publisher of Science News Elizabeth Marincola told the finalists. ?Your innovative thinking can help humanity adopt more effective responses to natural and man-made disasters, transition to safer and smarter vehicles, and discover new ways of treating and preventing disease.??

Jack Andraka claimed the $75,000 prize, given in honor of Intel cofounder Gordon E. Moore. A family tragedy motivated Andraka, a 15-year-old from Crownsville, Md., to create strips of paper that can help detect pancreatic cancer.

?My uncle died of pancreatic cancer 10 months ago,? Andraka said.

Nearly 44,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2012, the National Cancer Institute estimates. High levels of a protein called mesothelin in the blood can reveal the presence of such tumors. But the lack of a quick, cheap diagnostic test for the protein means that the disease tends to be caught late, making it an especially lethal cancer.

Searching for a better detector for mesothelin, Andraka coated paper with tiny tubes of atom-thick carbon. Antibodies stuck to the carbon nanotubes can grab the telltale protein and spread the tubes apart. The carbon?s resistance to the flow of electricity drops measurably as more protein attaches. Tests of the paper using blood samples from 100 people with cancer at different stages of the disease identified the presence of cancer every time, Andraka reported. ?

Nicholas Schiefer, a 17-year-old from Richmond Hill, Canada, received the Intel Foundation?s $50,000 Young Scientist Award for a new way to search Twitter tweets, Facebook status updates and other small Web documents. Algorithms trying to sift through such piles of information tend to use each keyword entered for the search in isolation. Schiefer linked keywords to other related words, connecting ?Fukushima? to ?earthquake? and ?nuclear disaster,? for instance.

This approach lends itself to rummaging through short text tidbits that may lack the specific keywords used in a search. The technique outperforms any other single algorithm on the hunt with five or fewer keywords.

?What I?ve developed could be a piece of a commercial search engine,? said Schiefer, who added that such engines typically use many algorithms working in concert.?

A Young Scientist Award also went to 18-year-old Ari Dyckovsky from Leesburg, Va., a science fair veteran whose work to push forward computers with quantum physics earned him a spot as a finalist earlier this year at the Intel Science Talent Search in Washington, D.C. That competition is also run by SSP.

When two atoms spit out particles of light with the same frequency, that light can be manipulated to create a quantum mechanical link, a phenomenon called entanglement. But the light usually comes out in a mishmash of different frequencies, so it can take minutes to make a connection.

Dyckovsky?s idea is to filter such light to a single frequency, which could theoretically cut the time to seconds or less and speed up the process of transferring quantum information over such connection. The research, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Physical Review A, could also give a boost to hybrid systems that join individual atoms to clumps of atoms called quantum dots.

?Just like with cars and just like with crops, hybridization can make things more efficient,? said Dyckovsky.

Each of the top projects also won a Best of Category award and $5,000 from Intel. So did 14 other projects in categories ranging from animal sciences to mathematics. First place and second place winners in each category received $3,000 and $1,500, respectively.?

Other students? projects earned them free trips to distant places. Assiya Kussainova, a 16-year-old from Karaganda in Kazakhstan, will travel to the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Bratislava, Slovakia. He invented a wind turbine that can spin and produce energy even in slow air currents.

Noticed for a filter that spares lungs from organic compounds in the air, 16-year-old Naomi Shah from Portland, Ore., will join Kussainova. So will another 16-year-old Portlander: Raghav Tripathi, who studied two molecules that build up in the brains of people with Alzheimer?s disease. He showed that the two molecules can stick together and found ways to disrupt that interaction.

Three other students will travel to the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar and attend the Nobel Prize ceremony, as winners of the Dudley R. Herschbach SIYSS Award. Herschbach received the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and is emeritus board chair of SSP.

Raghavendra Ramachanderan, a 17-year-old from Chennai, India, earned his voyage to Sweden by creating catalysts for regenerating spent fuel. The metal-based molecules harness the energy of visible light to knock oxygen atoms off glucose and tack on hydrogen, creating the hydrocarbon hexane.

?Using sunlight to do this kind of reaction is an entirely new thing,? said Ramachanderan.

SIYSS prizewinner Adam Noble recruited algae to collect silver particles. Nanosilver, which has antibacterial properties useful in socks and many other products, often ends up in wastewater. Worried that the substance might also have harmful effects on people, Noble crafted an algae filter that can remove 99.99 percent of the dissolved silver coming from a treatment plant near his high school in Lakefield, Canada.

At current market prices, the quantity of silver nanoparticles removed every year would be worth $4.2 million, the 18-year-old estimated. That could more than pay for a scaled up version of the device.

The third SIYSS recipient grows plants with designer roots. Huihui Fan of New York City discovered a gene that helps to control the size and number of roots. Disrupting the gene produces plants with stunted roots ? a useful attribute for plants grown in contaminated soil. Ramping up the gene spurs plants to grow deep roots with lots of branches that are great at sucking nutrients and water out of clean soil and, thus, require less fertilizer.

As they leave Pittsburgh, Fan and the other winners take with them not only their prizes but also new relationships that introduced them to the global nature of science. When she wasn?t explaining her project, Fan found herself explaining the concept of a sales tax to a finalist from Saudi Arabia in a neighboring booth.

?It was great to meet people from all over the world,? said Fan. ?I had fun with them at the dance parties ... even though I have no dance moves.?

(AP) ? A strong explosion shook Syria's eastern city of Deir el-Zour Saturday, apparently targeting a security agency in the latest of a wave of blasts to hit the country in recent months, state media and opposition activists reported.

State TV said a car bomb caused casualties and severe damage to residential and state buildings nearby. The pro-government Ikhbariya TV said the blast happened inside a parking lot connected to a military complex.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the explosion, which it also identified as a car bomb, took place near where the city branches of the Military Intelligence Directorate and Air Force Intelligence are located. Amateur videos posted online showed thick black smoke hovering over the city.

Security agency compounds in several Syrian cities have been targeted by a wave of explosions in the past months. The blasts raise fears that al-Qaida-linked Islamist militants, possibly including fighters from neighboring Iraq, have made strong inroads into Syria's rebel movement.

The most recent bombing targeted an intelligence building in Damascus on May 10. It struck during morning rush hour and the high death toll ? some 55 people ? made it the deadliest such attack since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March of last year.

Some of the tactics used in Damascus ? a small blast drawing attention prior to a larger one ? were reminiscent of al-Qaida attacks during Iraq's insurgency.

Deir el-Zour is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the Iraqi border. Saturday's blast came a day after the state-run news agency SANA reported that authorities foiled an attempt to blow up a car rigged with explosives in the city and detained those involved.

On Thursday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he believes that "alarmingly and surprisingly," al-Qaida must have been behind the May 10 attack in the Syrian capital.

"The recent terrorist attacks in Damascus suggest that these attacks were carefully orchestrated," he said. "Having seen the scale and sophistication of these terrorist attacks, one might think that this terrorist attack was done by a certain group with organization and clear intent. I have strongly condemned these terrorist attacks."
