Get an Online Payday Loan - How to Get Quick Cash Before the ...

To get an online payday loan all that most lenders require is that you are currently employed or have a steady source of income, are at least 18 years old, a United States citizen, and that you have an active checking/savings account. If you meet these initial conditions then you should have no problem to get a payday loan. While these short term loans typically carry a high interest rate with them, they are often a better financial decision than incurring fees on your other obligations. Credit card payments, rent/mortgage payments, car payments, and bounced checks all have penalty fees associated with them ranging anywhere from $30 - $60 per offense. These fees can add up very quickly for consumers with short term cash flow problems and makes getting an online payday loan the most financially prudent decision.

If you need to get quick cash before next pay day then you might want to get an online payday loan. Online loans are much more convenient than your typical payday retail store. After you fill out an application for your short term loan, the lender will review your information and contact you shortly thereafter to discuss terms. After terms have been agreed upon by both parties your requested funds will be deposited directly into your checking/savings account usually within 24 hours.

If you want to get an online payday loan then you need to know where to find a legitimate lender as there are some sites that will distribute your personal information to other online spammers. I would strongly encourage consumers who need to get quick cash before next pay day to go through a lender who is affiliated with several pay day lenders rather than going directly to a particular lender. These multiple lender websites do not handle the cash loan themselves but instead they make payday lenders compete over your business and will provide you the lender that has offered the lowest interest rate. This is the most efficient and really the only way to ensure that you are getting a true market rate.

To get quick cash before next pay day most online lenders will issue you a short term loan ranging from $100 - $1,500. They will then expect you to pay back the loan plus a finance charge on your next pay day. A typical finance charge or accrued interest is $15 for every $100 you borrow. While pay day loans are an expensive form of borrowing often they are less expensive than incurring fees on other obligations or bills. Credit card companies and banks are significantly increasing their penalty fees for late payments or bounced checks and it is usually less costly for the consumer to get an online payday loan.

So if you need to get quick cash before next pay day then I suggest you find a reputable multiple lender site. They are by far the most convenient and most efficient way for consumers to get an online payday loan. I have ran into short term cash flow problems several times in my career and needed to get quick cash. The multiple lender site I listed below has consistently provided the most competitive rates on the market and I would strongly recommend them for your short term loan.

Training the next generation data scientists | Computerworld Hong ...

An online-only degree program aims to preemptively address businesses' need forThe University of California at Berkeley's new School of Information (iSchool) masters' level program aims to help students gain the knowledge, tools and training to land high-level, highly sought-after positions with businesses looking to use big data to improve efficiency, create new revenue streams, and compete more effectively in the marketplace.

Missing: Data Scientists
The new Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) program is the school's first online-only degree program and is an effort to preemptively address businesses' need for skilled data scientists, says Dean of the School of Information AnnaLee Saxenien.

What's been missing in the market, Saxenien says, is mid-level, master's degree training that can bridge the gap between workers in business who are responsible for collecting the data and the current crop of data scientists, many of whom have Ph.Ds and are working in academia.

"There certainly are folks today in business and in academia who can fill these roles, and they are very valuable," says Michael Chui, principal, McKinsey Global Institute, a research and analyst firm.

"The problem is there aren't enough of them to fill the need. The effective use of data science has applications in almost every business in every organization around the world, and that's the issue," Chui says.

"In the future, we'll be dealing with information not just as text and physical artifacts, but [also as] video, data, audio, sensor data collected from computers, Web clickstream data – and that will all be globally networked. We are going to need a new education paradigm to address that," Saxenien says.

Above and beyond the new types of data, graduates of the program will be educated in the larger social, economic and personal usage issues that surround data, she says. This new degree program is much more narrowly focused on teaching students to work with data sets of all sizes; to get them to understand how to ask good questions about data; to teach them how to clean it, extract it, put it together and explore it. It's about how to use statistics and machine learning tools, across the whole spectrum of data analytics, Saxenien says.

"We're not just educating people in programming and data mining, but in law and legal issues, in social science and behavioral studies, user interface design and user interaction, for instance," she says.

Where the Data Scientist Jobs Are
Businesses in almost every industry are finding ways to use data to improve efficiency, create new revenue streams, better target marketing and advertising to customers, and develop new products and services, says McKinsey Global Institute's Chui.

"We don't see any area of a business that can't benefit from using data to streamline processes, better meet the needs of customers and users -- to become more effective and more competitive," Chui says.

Currently, demand for data scientists is concentrated in "traditional" sectors like IT and finance, and applicants to the program tend to hold careers in these fields, says Saxenien. But, she says, the application of data science should expand greatly over the next few years, offering graduates opportunities in real estate, government, healthcare, construction, manufacturing and more.

In addition, McKinsey's Chui says, graduates from the MIDS and similar programs will need to educate their employers and future colleagues in how to be smarter, more effective consumers of the data that's analyzed.

Mugabe seeks to boost Europe trade ties, calls for sanctions lift

Harare (AFP) - President Robert Mugabe on Thursday called on European nations to lift sanctions on Zimbabwe in order to boost trade ties.

"We do no want to visit France. I do not want your girls. I do not want to visit France for romantic purposes. I want to develop relations between us," he said.

Speaking while he met new the new diplomats from France, Germany and Holland, the 89-year-old urged France to consider whether sanctions should be kept in place.

"Can France have a national introspection and see whether it's right to continue to pursue the policy of sanctions against Zimbabwe," he said.

EU countries imposed travel bans and asset freezes on Mugabe, his inner circle and linked companies, following elections in 2002 which western observers said were rigged to hand him victory.

"We must now look at the future and the need for sanctions to go," Mugabe said.

The EU lifted most of its sanctions earlier this year, yet an asset freeze and travel ban remains for the veteran leader.

"We want the removal of economic sanctions so we can export beef to Europe. Let's get to trade," said Mugabe, whose 33-year rule was extended in July polls, said.

"Let our flowers find home in the Netherlands. Let our greens find their way into the Dutch market but for as long as there are sanctions, this will be difficult."

The EU and US, which also has sanctions in place, rejected the recent vote on grounds that the polls were not credible.

Mugabe has threatened western countries with retaliation over the sanctions.

Mo. golfer survives fall into Ill. course sinkhole

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Mark Mihal was having a good opening day on the links when he noticed an unusual depression on the 14th fairway at Annbriar Golf Club in southern Illinois. Remarking to his friends how awkward it would be to have to hit out of it, he went over for a closer look.

One step onto the pocked section and the 43-year-old mortgage broker plunged into a sinkhole. He landed 18 feet down with a painful thud, and his friends managed to hoist him to safety with a rope after about 20 minutes. But Friday's experience gave Mihal quite a fright, particularly after the recent death of a Florida man whose body hasn't been found since a sinkhole swallowed him and his bedroom.

"I feel lucky just to come out of it with a shoulder injury, falling that far and not knowing what I was going to hit," Mihal, from the St. Louis suburb of Creve Coeur, told The Associated Press before heading off to learn whether he'll need surgery. "It was absolutely crazy."

Annbriar general manager Russ Nobbe described the sinkhole as "an extremely unfortunate event, an event we feel is an act of nature."

"We don't feel there is any way we could have foreseen this happening," he told a Tuesday news conference.

Mihal said it was a real downer on what had been a fine outing.

With winter finally nearing an end, "it was the first day to get to play in a long time," he said. "So I wasn't expecting too much."

Golfing with buddies, Mihal was waiting to hit his third shot, some 100 yards from the pin on the par 5, when he noticed a bathtub-looking indentation about knee deep just behind him on the fairway. At just one over par for the round, the golfer with a 6 handicap was on a roll.

Then the ground gave way beneath him.

"It didn't look unstable," Mihal said. "And then I was gone. I was just freefalling. It felt like forever, but it was just a second or two, and I didn't know what I was going to hit. And all I saw was darkness."

His golfing buddies didn't see him vanish into the earth but noticed he wasn't visible, figuring he had tripped and fallen out of sight down a hill. But one of them heard Mihal's moans and went to investigate.

"He just thought it was some crazy magic trick or something," Mihal said.

Hardly.

Getting panicky and knowing his shoulder "was busted," Mihal assessed his dilemma in pitch darkness as he rested on a mound of mud, wondering if the ground would give way more and send him deeper into the pit that was 10-feet wide at the opening, then broadened out into the shape of a bell below the surface.

"I was looking around, clinging to the mud pile, trying to see if there was a way out," he said. "At that point, I started yelling, "I need a ladder and a rope, and you guys need to get me out of here.'"

A ladder hustled to the scene was too short, and Mihal's damaged shoulder crimped his ability to climb.

"At some point, I said, 'I need to get out of here. Now,'" Mihal recalled.

One of his golf partners, a real-estate agent, made his way into the hole, converted his sweater into a splint for Mihal and tied a rope around his friend, who was pulled to safety.

While disturbing, such sink-holes aren't uncommon in southwestern Illinois, where old underground mines frequently cause the earth to settle. In Mihal's case, the culprit was subsurface limestone that dissolves from acidic rainwater, snowmelt and carbon dioxide, eventually causing the ground to collapse, said Sam Panno, a senior geochemist with the Illinois State Geological Survey.

That region "is riddled with sinkholes," with as many as 15,000 recorded, Panno said.

Nobbe told the AP other golfers are not in danger and the Annbriar course will remain open while officials seek geologist recommendations for what to do about the 14th hole's sinkhole.

"Every geologist we've talked to says it is unreasonable and unnecessary" to survey the entire grounds for other sinkhole threats, he added.

Mihal, meanwhile, is debating a return to Annbriar.

"It's a great course. I love the course," Mihal said, having played Annbriar a couple dozen times during the past decade. "But I would have a tough time probably walking down that hole again."

Myriad languages, cultures challenge health reform

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ? Set on a gritty corner of Oakland's International Boulevard, the nonprofit Street Level Health Project offers free checkups to patients who speak a total of 22 languages, from recent Mongolian immigrants seeking a doctor to Burmese refugees in need of a basic dental exam.

It also provides a window into one of the challenges for state officials who are trying to implement the Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's sweeping health care overhaul.

Understanding the law is a challenge even for governors, state lawmakers and agency officials, but delivering its message to non-English speakers who can benefit from it is shaping up as a special complication. That is especially true in states with large and diverse immigrant populations.

For Zaya Jaden, a 35-year-old from Mongolia, getting free care for her sister's persistent migraine was a much higher priority than considering how the expansion of the nation's social safety net through the Affordable Care Act might benefit her.

The sisters crammed into the clinic's waiting room, sandwiched between families chatting in the indigenous Guatemalan language Mam, and discussed whether enrolling in Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act would work for the family's finances.

"It was a good idea that Obama had, but I don't know if it will work for me," said Jaden, who gets private insurance for her family through her job as a laundress at an Oakland hotel and currently makes too much money to qualify for Medicaid. "If I make less than what I make to try to qualify for the government program, how could I pay my rent?"

Jaden's ambivalence demonstrates the cultural and language hurdles that California and several other states are facing as they build exchanges ? or health insurance marketplaces ?and try to expand coverage to ethnic and hard-to-reach populations.

California has the largest minority population of any state, about 22.3 million people. That's followed by Texas with 13.7 million, New York with 8.1 million, Florida with 7.9 million and Illinois with 4.7 million.

In Illinois, where nearly 1.2 million residents don't speak English well, the task of translating information about the health care overhaul into other languages has fallen to nonprofit groups and community organizations.

"So far it's fallen to us, and we don't know what (the state's) capacity will be to go beyond Spanish," said Stephanie Altman of Health and Disability Advocates.

The state intends to submit an outreach plan to the federal government this spring. Illinois officials expect federal grant money eventually will be available to help reach non-English speakers, said Mike Claffey, a spokesman for Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn.

The U.S. Census estimates that more than 55 million people speak a language other than English at home. Nearly 63 percent of those are Spanish-speakers, with the highest concentrations in Texas, California and New Mexico. Chinese was the third most commonly spoken language, with large populations in California, New York, Hawaii and Massachusetts.

Five other languages have at least 1 million speakers: Tagalog, French, Vietnamese, German and Korean.

In California, two-thirds of the estimated 2.6 million adults who will be eligible for federal subsidies in the health care exchange will be people of color, while roughly 1 million will speak English less than very well, according to a joint study by the California Pan-Ethnic Health Network and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the University of California, Berkeley Labor Center.

With such diversity in cultures and language, the authors said the success of health care reform "hinges in large part on how well the state conducts culturally and linguistically competent outreach and enrollment efforts."

"If the exchange did no targeted outreach, there could be 110,000 fewer limited-English proficient individuals enrolled," said Cary Sanders, director of policy analysis for CPEHN, an Oakland-based multicultural health advocacy group.

Even the relatively mundane task of developing a brand for California's new health care exchange has prompted some angst.

The exchange's staff tried to come up with a name that signified health insurance and would translate well into Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese and other languages commonly used in California.

The exchange's five-member board settled on "Covered California" and is currently testing tag lines to see which words resonate best in focus groups. Advocates disappointed by the name are hoping the board selects a tag line that will be simple to understand and translate.

Jaden, for instance, said she had no idea how "Covered California" would translate to Mongolian.

More importantly, they want Covered California to launch an inclusive marketing and outreach campaign in a place where a majority of the population is not white and nearly 7 million residents speak limited English.

"'Covered California' translates to California Cubierto in Spanish, but what exactly does it mean?" said Laura Lopez, Street Level Health Project's executive director, who immigrated to the United States from Peru years ago. "It's not just providing a piece of paper that says this is what is covered. It's really having people on the ground talking with the community."

California's exchange isn't shying away from the challenges.

Its executive director, Peter Lee, recently announced that new federal funding will be used to support a multi-language campaign, build a network of community-based assistants who can guide people to the right health plan and multilingual call centers.

The exchange is making $43 million available for community-based organizations, faith-based groups, nonprofits and local governments to compete for outreach and education grants.

"California is unique from every other state not only geographically because our population is spread out, but you have multiple ethnic populations that are traditionally hard to reach, and they need their own custom way to be reached," said Oscar Hidalgo, the exchange's communications director.

The exchange estimates that 5.6 million Californians are without health insurance, or 16 percent of the population under age 65. Of that number, 4.6 million are eligible for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, while the rest are not because of their immigration status.

Advocates say California should refine its efforts to reach non-English speakers.

Doreena Wong, who promotes health access for immigrants at the Los Angeles-based Asian Pacific American Legal Center, is among those urging the exchange to build a website that is not just in English and Spanish, but to offer translations in other languages prevalent throughout the state: Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, Farsi (Persian), Hmong, Khmer (Cambodian), Korean, Russian, Tagalog and Vietnamese.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, organizations that receive federal funding have to provide written notices in English, Spanish and other languages spoken by 10 percent or more of the households in the area they serve.

Wong recently told the board that many people eligible for the exchange aren't proficient in English, have limited education or have never had health care insurance. Other groups have requested the exchange, at a minimum, add Chinese.

Hidalgo said the state's health exchange website, www.coveredca.com , is being created in such a way more languages can be added later. He said the exchange first needs to launch an introductory website where consumers can learn about impending health care changes, such as federal subsidies for working families and tax credits for small businesses.

"It's very challenging to put together a website that's consumer friendly in English, and then to do it in 13 languages is a very, very big task," he said. "I think what's important for us is to take a step in English and Spanish and figure out what the feedback is. ... We don't have all the answers at this moment, but we're going to find them."

Child born with HIV is 'functionally cured'

For the first time, doctors are reporting that a child born with HIV and put on an unusually aggressive treatment regimen has been functionally cured of the infection.

Now 2 years old, the Mississippi girl has only trace amounts of HIV in her bloodstream and has been able to keep the virus that causes AIDS in check without the help of medication, doctors said Sunday at a medical conference in Atlanta.

If researchers demonstrate that the same treatment can work in other children, it could drastically alter the lives of the estimated 1,000 babies born with HIV every day, most of them in Africa, doctors said.

"If there is a trial that shows this can happen again, then this will be very important," said Dr. Karin Nielsen, a pediatrician who specializes in infectious diseases at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine who was not involved in the girl's case. "You'll be able to treat people very intensively and reverse the disease."

Attempting to replicate the results in other HIV-positive infants is "our next step," said Dr. Deborah Persaud, a virologist at Johns Hopkins Children's Center who described the Mississippi patient at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. She and others are to make a formal presentation during the conference's scientific program Monday.

Details of the unusual case have not yet been published in a medical journal so that other doctors and researchers can assess it. It's possible that the girl ? although at high risk for contracting the virus from her mother ? was not actually infected herself, skeptics said.

Researchers who have examined her case extensively say they believe she did have the virus but was able to knock it back before it had time to establish itself in parts of the immune system where it can remain dormant and strike again after drug treatments are stopped. Such viral reservoirs are essentially impossible to treat once they have been established.

"Is it possible the child was not infected? Yes. Is it likely? No," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases. The virus probably could not have remained in the baby's body as long as it had if she had not been infected, he said.

In the United States and other developed countries, more than 98% of babies born to mothers with HIV do not get the virus thanks to preventive treatments that begin before birth and last up to six weeks afterward. In this case, the girl's mother did not know she had HIV until she took a screening test after she was already in labor, said Dr. Hannah Gay, the pediatric HIV specialist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson who treated the baby.

Instead of giving the newborn just one antiretroviral drug, Gay opted for a three-drug regimen that is sometimes given as a long-term treatment for infected babies, she said. The first infusion was begun when the girl was only 30 hours old ? several days before blood tests confirmed she was HIV-positive at birth, Gay said.

With continued treatment, it took less than a month for the girl's viral load to become undetectable with standard clinical tests, Gay said.

The treatments continued normally for about 15 months, then became sporadic. When the girl was 18 months old, her mother stopped bringing her to the doctor and she didn't receive her medications.

Five months later, the girl returned to the clinic and had her blood drawn. Gay said she expected to find that her viral load was high. Instead, her HIV levels were still undetectable. Additional tests a few days later confirmed the results, Gay said.

That's when Persaud and Dr. Katherine Luzuriaga, an immunologist at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, began studying the girl's blood. Using the most sensitive tests available, they were able to find tiny amounts of HIV "particles" but no virus capable of replicating, the research team reported.

The analysis was funded by the National Institutes of Health and amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research.

Among adults with HIV, a lucky few ? less than 1 in 200 ? are able to keep the virus at bay without the help of medications. But this girl is not one of these "elite controllers," Fauci said, because in her case doctors could not detect the presence of any virus capable of replication at all.

"You can always isolate virus from elite controllers," he said. "It's just that they control it so well, it doesn't replicate."

The case of the Mississippi patient is unusual because doctors would not stop a patient's treatment intentionally to see how he or she would fare without antiretroviral drugs. It is also unusual, Fauci said, because most pregnant women in the U.S. who are HIV-positive receive prenatal treatment to fight the virus, which dramatically decreases the risk of transferring the infection to the baby.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that fewer than 200 babies in the nation were infected with HIV at birth in 2010.

But in developing regions ? including sub-Saharan Africa, the site of two-thirds of the world's HIV infections ? it's a different story. Every year, 300,000 to 400,000 babies are born infected with HIV, Fauci said.

More than half of those children die within the first year, said UCLA's Nielsen, who conducts research on HIV infection in infants and children. If the triple-drug treatment is proved in clinical trials, the therapy could be a boon for these babies.

Fauci suggested that in addition to such trials, researchers might want to take another look at children who have been on antiretroviral therapies since shortly after birth to see whether any of them had the disease cleared from their bodies.

"You don't want to recommend stopping therapy, but you do want to go back and look very carefully," he said. "It may be that we cured them and we don't realize it."

The Mississippi girl is the second patient in the world known to be functionally cured of HIV. The first was Timothy Brown ? better known as the Berlin patient ? who had not only HIV but also acute myeloid leukemia. When oncologists gave him a bone marrow transplant in 2007, they selected a donor who had a rare genetic mutation that blocks the HIV virus from entering cells. As a result, Brown is now immune to the virus and remains HIV-free without taking any medication.

US boosts aid to Syrian opposition, rebel fighters

ROME (AP) ? The Obama administration said Thursday that it will provide the Syrian opposition with an additional $60 million in assistance and ? in a significant policy shift ? will for the first time provide nonlethal aid like food and medical supplies directly to rebels battling to oust President Bashar Assad.

The move was announced by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at an international conference on Syria in Rome, and several European nations are expected in the coming days to take similar steps in working with the military wing of the opposition in order to ramp up pressure on Assad to step down and pave the way for a democratic transition.

"We do this because we need to stand on the side of those in this fight who want to see Syria rise again and see democracy and human rights," Kerry said. "The stakes are really high, and we can't risk letting this country in the heart of the Middle East being destroyed by vicious autocrats or hijacked by the extremists."

"No nation, no people should live in fear of their so-called leaders," he said, adding that President Barack Obama's "decision to take further steps now is the result of the brutality of superior armed force propped up by foreign fighters from Iran and Hezbollah."

Kerry and senior officials from 11 countries most active in calling for Assad to leave said in a joint statement released by the Italian foreign ministry that they had agreed in Rome on "the need to change the balance of power on the ground." It said the countries represented "will coordinate their efforts closely so as to best empower the Syrian people and support the Supreme Military Command of the Free Syrian Army in its efforts to help them exercise self-defense."

Britain and France, two countries that Kerry visited before Italy on his first official trip as secretary of state, have signaled that they want to begin supplying the rebels with defensive military equipment such as combat body armor, armored vehicles, night vision goggles and training. They are expected to make decisions on those items in the near future in line with new guidance from the European Union, which still bars the provision of weapons and ammunition to anyone in Syria.

"We must go above and beyond the efforts we are making now," said Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, who hosted the conference. "We can no longer allow this massacre to continue."

Appearing beside Terzi and Kerry, the leader of the Syrian opposition coalition, Mouaz al-Khatib, delivered a forceful and emotional demand for Assad to stop the brutality of his forces that have in recent days launched scud missile attacks on the city of Aleppo that have been roundly condemned by much of the Western and Arab worlds

"Bashar Assad, for once in your life, behave as a human being," Khatib said. "Bashar Assad, you have to make at least one wise decision in your life for the future of your country."

The opposition has been appealing for some time for the international community to boost its support and to provide its military wing with lethal assistance, and while al-Khatib did not mention those requests, he pointedly made no reference to the new assistance that Kerry announced. Instead, he urged outside nations to support the creation of protected humanitarian corridors inside Syria, which the foreign ministers said they had "positively considered" by made no decisions.

Kerry defended the limited U.S. assistance, saying it was just part of what was being offered and that other countries would fill in any gaps. He said he was confident that the "totality" of the aid should be enough to prod Assad to start changing his calculations on remaining in power.

"We're doing this, but other countries are doing other things," he replied, without going into specifics. "I am confident the totality of this effort is going to have an impact on the ability of the Syrian opposition to accomplish its goals." Kerry said Thursday's meeting in Rome marked the "beginning of a process that will in fact change his (Assad's) calculation."

Washington has already provided $385 million in humanitarian aid to Syria's war-weary population and $54 million in communications equipment, medical supplies and other nonlethal assistance to Syria's political opposition. The U.S. also has screened rebel groups for Turkey and American allies in the Arab world that have armed rebel fighters.

But until now, no U.S. dollars or provisions have gone directly to rebel fighters, reflecting concerns about forces that have allied themselves with more radical Islamic elements since Assad's initial crackdown on peaceful protesters in March 2011.

The $60 million in new aid to the political opposition is intended to help the opposition govern newly liberated areas of Syria by aiding in the delivery of services and improving rule of law and human rights as well as to blunt the influence of extremists who have made inroads in some places.

The rations and medical supplies for the fighters will be delivered to the military council for distribution only to carefully vetted members of the Free Syrian Army, U.S. officials said.

The U.S. will be sending technical advisers to the Syrian National Coalition offices in Cairo to oversee and help them spend the money for good governance and rule of law. The advisers will be from non-governmental organizations and other groups that do this kind of work.

The foreign ministers' presentation was disrupted by one protester who called on them to "stop supporting terrorists."

Family fitness | SandBell games and exercises for kids

By Ashley Benson

When our kids are young, we teach them to eat, walk and to not touch to the stove. ?As they grow, we educate them about animals and the sounds they make, we show them how to dress themselves and warn them to not run out into the street. We pass along these skills to protect them and to empower our children to succeed in the world.

I want to talk about another area we, as parents, are responsible for: the HEALTH and FITNESS of our kiddos.

We need to be teaching our kids how to take care of their bodies early on. They need to know the real reason we eat food (so our body can grow and repair)! It?s ironic to me that we make sure they take good care of their teeth because, ?These grown up teeth are the only ones you will get!? Welllllll? what about our body?

Let?s talk, for a second, about my iPhone.

- I love it! ?It?s super useful to me in my work, for my family, and in my social life. It is personal to me!

- I am the only one who has this screen saver! I change it out depending on my mood or the season.

ashley benson Finding Health as a Family

- I have all the apps I need and have them organized the way I want them? until my 7 year old gets hold of it!

- It lets me know when I need to update it. I seem to be improving it all the time. I don?t think I will ever stop improving and updating it.

- It tells me when it?s low on ?energy? and needs more fuel, so then I recharge it.

- I know it so well. I am aware when something isn?t quite right. Do I really need to get it repaired by an expert? Or do I have the power to fix this myself. If this is the case, it usually requires some research.

- My phone is personal to me and I try to use it to its full potential!

Now, if only we held our own body with the same regard that we hold our phones!?

Now I want to talk about my body:

- I am thankful for my body! It is super useful to me. I use it for my work, my family and my social life.

- I am the only me in this world! No one else walks around in this body but me. I get the choice of how I dress my body and it reflects ?me!

- I have everything I need to function: a respiratory, circulatory, digestive, nervous, and musculoskeletal system. I want to keep all of my ?apps? updated so they function properly and I get the most out of them.

- If I listen, my body will tell me when I need to update it. I may be deficient in something, dehydrated or stressed.

- My body tells me when I?m low on energy: I need to know how to recharge.

- Sometimes I get a fever or sore throat. I might need a doctor to take a look and medicine to get me past it, but I just might be able to take care of this on my own with the right care.

- My body is special and I want to utilize it to its full potential!

Ok, now back to our kids. We can encourage this mentality in them early, it?s possible! Parents, let?s start seeing ourselves as health teachers and paying the same attention to our bodies as we do to our iPhones. ?This may mean that you have to gain some knowledge for yourself first. The good news is there is health and fitness information everywhere! Yes, it seems to contradict itself, but use common sense and do the best you can! Invite your kids in on the journey and learn together. After all, the home can be the most effective hands on class room!

You might be saying, ?Well that?s easy for you to say, you?re a trainer!? Yes my kids live with a personal trainer and are exposed to the health and fitness world daily, but it?s me, ?Mom?, who teaches them to care for their body because I love them so much and want the best for them! We are all learners, and I love inviting them in on the process.

Here are a few examples of how my family pursues a healthy lifestyle together:

CASE STUDY 1

Subject: Iver, age 7 currently, began teaching at age 4

Goal: For Iver to not only eat the healthy food I give him, but to welcome it!

Method: Teach anatomy to my 4-year-old boy, on his level.

kids veggies 200x300 Finding Health as a Family

Strategy: ?Early on I started teaching Iver about his immune system. I explained that his immune system isa system of biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease. ?I wanted him to understand white blood cells.

Although my kids are super smart, I simplified this information a bit:??Did you know that you have an army that lives inside your body? Your army is made up of thousands of soldiers! These soldiers protect you from bad guys that sneak into your body and make you sick! Did you know that every time you get sick it?s because a bad guy has attacked? When they come and invade, your soldiers go into battle! Now we need to make sure they have all the best weapons to fight with. Every time you eat this healthy food, you are making your soldiers strong and giving them the best weapons to fight with!? I tap into his imagination and we continue talking about little people running around inside his body! My son is 7 now, and I get NO resistance when it comes to feeding his soldiers.

CASE STUDY 2

Subject: My whole family. My husband, Taylor age 11, Iver age 7, and myself.

Goal: For us to add more vegetables into our day? without a fight

Method: Tap into our competitive side.

Strategy: A few weeks ago I started a contest: Whoever eats the most servings of vegetables in a week gets to eat a donut or cupcake in front of the others. Honestly, I can?t believe how successful this is! I keep a chart in the kitchen and we make tally marks to keep up with our points. It has been one of my favorite joys to watch my 7-year-old boy open the fridge at 7:00 pm and say, ?Are there any other veggies I can eat tonight?? or my 11-year-old daughter pack her lunch for school adding veggies without any input from me!

When I cook a meal, I tell them how many veggie points they will get if they finish their plate. It?s just fun to watch my son finish his food, and the amount of snacking has decreased since we began this. He LOVES having the power to make a difference!

ashley cupcake 300x225 Finding Health as a Family

Well, I won the first week, but I was so proud of how my kids kept up with me! I took myself out of the race week 2 (I can?t win 2 weeks in a row). Week 2, my kids tied with 24 points each! I?m really proud of them and we will continue getting points for the veggies we eat! It?s fun and bonding to cheer each other on and celebrate victories with one another.

They have learned that health is a choice.

CASE STUDY 3

Subject: Me and my kids

Goal: To spend quality time with my kids and grab a workout at the same time.

Method: Play games that will challenge us physically using SandBells. The SandBells provide a fun, safe resistance for our workout.

Strategy: I came up with a few games that would give us varying levels of complexity and skill. For my 7-year-old, Iver, I kept the movements simple like throwing and catching. This worked his hand/eye coordination and kept him entertained. I set up Taylor (age 11) with more complex moves, like tricep presses, jump squats and lateral rotation that would challenge her coordination, but also build her strength and endurance.

In creating these games, I made sure that my position would provide a great workout for myself as well. My workout consisted of sit-ups, push-ups, squat jumps, chest presses, overhead tricep extensions, and core work, all with the SandBells!

At the end of our playtime, I realized I did a lot more repetitions playing with the kids than I would have done if I were just getting in a workout. We had a blast together. The kids are asking when we are getting out to play again? I better start creating more games!

Ustream on PlayStation 4: discovery, one-click sharing and being 'a modern day cable provider'

How Ustream will work on PlayStation 4

"We've partnered with some of the biggest and most influential social networks in the world, including Facebook and Ustream, to bring gamers' friends into games like never before," former Gaikai CEO David Perry told attendees of Sony's PlayStation 4 event last week. It was the only mention Ustream got during the show, despite the video streaming service playing a critical role in Sony's next video game console. In-tandem with the PlayStation 4's new DualShock 4 controller and its "Share" button, users will be able to quickly upload saved gameplay video clips or directly stream their game out to the internet. The console's lead system architect, Mark Cerny, expanded on the importance of the Share button and its implications to the PlayStation 4 during last week's presentation. "Social play is so important to PlayStation 4 that we've added in hardware to support it, in the form of dedicated, always-on video compression and decompression systems," he said.

We saw a bit of the game sharing / streaming interface during Sony's presentation, but were left wondering about specifics: how will discovery work? and what of other, non-gaming Ustream content? Thankfully, Ustream CEO Brad Hunstable was able to offer up most of our answers in a recent interview. "Our goal is to allow discovery in a very clean user experience, both in discovery on the console itself and on various platforms that the content'll be available on (like Ustream, Twitter, and Facebook)," Hunstable said. He wouldn't speak to the specifics of how that discovery will work, nor would he say if you'll be able to sign-in simply using your PlayStation Network ID or if you'll have to sign up for a separate Ustream account, but he stressed that the decisions being made are, "based on what's easiest and best for the gamer." That same rubric is (thankfully) being applied to functionality. "The goal is to make sure it's very easy -- one click of a button, super simple -- and most importantly make sure it looks really, really good. And is viewable wherever people want to watch it from," Hunstable said.

Flying Plates Learn To Catch Flying Poles In Switzerland

Imagine a plate, like a dinner plate, hovering mid-air. The technical name for this gizmo is a quadrocopter. But what it's about to do is something you might see at the circus. So in comes the man with the top hat, (me) saying "Laaadies and Gentlemen ... Hold on to your seats, Prepare to be astonished ..." Then this happens:

Let's take a pole, basically a three foot stick, and fling it at the plate.

What are the chances that we could get the plate to zoom under the pole, catch it mid-air, (remember, it's got no arms, it's a plate!) and balance it upright? Oh, and the plate isn't being guided by a person. It's got to do this itself. It has to learn this, through trial and error.

That would be one very, very, very talented plate.

And now before your very eyes, I'm going to show you one, designed by a grad student working in Switzerland, Dario Brescianini. He studies artificial intelligence at ETH Zurich's Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control, where they design clever robots. In recent years, the students there have been building these simple, dinner-plate thingies that fly. Plates with propellers.

But First, Ball-Tossing

Last year some students in Zurich taught these plates to toss a rubber ball, which was a little surprising. Then they got the plates to "catch" the ball and ricochet it back and forth; they call this mid-air "juggling." I'd call it "pingpong," but whatever you call it, it was very impressive, as you can see here ...

And then along comes Dario.

As I said, he tossed poles (with shock absorbers ? a balloon filled with flour at one end) at his robots, hoping the plates could catch, balance, then juggle these flying sticks. Impossible? No. Dario, quoted on a AI site called Robohub, said he found the problem "interesting" ...

... because it combined various areas of current research and many complex questions had to be answered: How can the pole be launched off the quadrocopter? Where should it be caught and ? more importantly ? when? What happens at impact? The biggest challenge to get the system running was the catching part.

And Now, Pole Tossing

I'll say. But, as you're about to see, he did it. Dario gave the machine physics lessons, but it took trial and error for the robots to figure out the timing. I find this totally amazing.

One more thing ? Some of you are going to say this was Photoshopped, or it's all a trick. I don't think so. Dario worked with fellow grad student Markus Hehn and Professor Raffaello D'Andrea, artificial intelligence scholars with impressive resumes. The school is well-known. If this video is a slick prank, they would have chosen a slicker narrator. Dario (if that is Dario) reads his copy like an embarrassed announcer at a funeral. He will never get a job in broadcasting, but that's no problem, because he's aces with flying poles.

Watch his plates learn to:

1. throw
2. catch
3. juggle

I can't imagine what's next.

Tunisian secularists protest against new Islamist PM

Tunis (Reuters) - Thousands of Tunisians protested on Saturday against the new prime minister-designate Ali Larayedh, a hardliner from the main Islamist Ennahda party.

President Moncef Marzouki asked Larayedh to form a government on Friday, in the aftermath of the February 6 assassination of secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid.

Outgoing prime minister Hamadi Jebali resigned on Tuesday because Ennahda rejected his plan for an apolitical technocrat cabinet to prepare for elections.

Larayedh, the new premier-designate, is controversial because opposition secularists accuse the Interior Ministry which he headed of failing to curb Islamist violence.

About 3000 secularists flocked to the capital's main street Habib Bourguiba raising banners hostile to the Ennahda party and Larayedh.

They chanted "Larayedh out" and "The people want to bring down the regime".

Tunisia plunged into political crisis on February 6 when the assassination of secular opposition politician Chokri Belaid ignited the biggest street protests since the overthrow of strongman Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali two years ago.

Larayedh, 57, is viewed as part of Ennahda's hardline wing, which rejects any role for parties linked to the Ben Ali era.

A maritime engineer, Larayedh spent 15 years in jail under Ben Ali.

Petition to legalize phone unlocking reaches goal

A Whitehouse.gov petition to rescind the recent decision making personal unlocking of cell phones illegal has reached the 100,000 signatures necessary for an official response from the administration.

Unlocking is the process of removing carrier restrictions on a device; For instance, a phone bought at Verizon might only work on its network, even if its hardware is compatible with AT&T's network. By unlocking it, a user could take their phone to another network and avoid having to buy a new one.

Various carriers took different approaches to unlocking phones, some offering unlocked phones out of the box, some making the process a chore. But if you wanted to do it, you generally could.

That is, until October of 2012 brought a decision from the Librarian of Congress that, under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), unlocking your own phone was technically illegal, and could only be done with carrier permission. A 90-day grace period allowed one last chance to unlock, but ended on Jan. 26, at which point it became forbidden by law.

The decision was criticized widely by groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation for removing consumer options for no good reason. Owners of phones, they argued, should be able to do whatever they like with them ? from installing custom software to unlocking the device for new carriers.

Shortly before unlocking became officially illegal, a petition on the Whitehouse.gov We The People site was started, asking for the decision to be rescinded, or if that wasn't possible, to pass a law allowing phone unlocking. With just two days left before its expiration, it hit the 100,000-signature mark that means the administration will issue an official response.

It's doubtful that unlocking will be made legal again in a hurry (such legislation would certainly take time), but at the very least, it is clear that many are concerned about this perceived misstep in tech governance.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBC News Digital. His personal website is coldewey.cc.

Asian markets decline on Europe concerns

BEIJING (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Friday following weak economic data from Europe and moves by China's government to cool inflation pressures.

Oil rose to just above $93 a barrel despite Wall Street's overnight decline and higher U.S. jobless numbers.

The Asian heavyweight, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index, fell 0.5 percent to 11,252.41 while in the region's biggest economy, China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.1 percent to 2,323.72. Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei also suffered declines.

Australia was the region's only major gainer, with the ASX/S&P 200 rising 1.1 percent to 5,033.50, recovering from Thursday's 2.3 percent plunge.

The Shanghai index slid 3 percent Thursday for its biggest decline in 15 months after Beijing announced new measures to cool politically sensitive housing costs. Also this week, the central bank drained liquidity from markets in a sign it is trying to restrain pressure for prices to rise as the economy gradually recovers.

"Policy will try to sharply slow availability of funds in the economy," said Credit Agricole CIB economist Dariusz Kowalczyk in a report.

Asian markets followed European bourses down after weaker-than-expected industrial data from heavyweight economies France and Germany. France's CAC-40 tumbled 2.3 percent on Thursday and markets in Germany, Britain and Italy suffered marked declines.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.7 percent to 22,746.37, Seoul's Kospi was off 0.2 percent at 2,010.81 and Taipei's Taiex lost 0.4 percent to 7,921.08. Singapore fell 0.3 percent.

U.S. markets were rattled by Wednesday's release of notes from the Fed's last policy meeting that suggested some policymakers were worried about the cost of its monetary stimulus.

That sparked concern the Fed might wind down asset purchases, though some analysts suggested such fears were overblown.

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits rose 20,000 last week to 362,000 but said longer-term, the job market appears to be improving.

The Dow Jones industrial average declined 0.5 percent and the broader S&P 500 index fell 0.6 percent.

The benchmark price of crude for April delivery was up 36 cents to $93.20 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.24, or 2.4 percent, to $92.98 on Thursday, the second drop of 2 percent in two days.

In currency markets, the dollar fell to 93.15 yen from 93.26 yen late Thursday. The euro was up slightly at $1.320.

Indian filmmaker, Muslim groups reach agreement - Charlotte ...

NEW DELHI Indian movie star Kamal Hassan has reached a settlement with Muslim organizations in southern India and agreed to delete seven scenes from his latest spy thriller, Indian media reported Sunday.

The Tamil Nadu government had banned Hassan's film "Vishwaroopam" in the state following protests from several Muslim groups objecting to the film's portrayal of Islam.

Hassan and Muslim leaders reached an agreement Saturday after more than five hours of talks.

Islamic groups have promised to call off their protests against the film and withdraw legal cases that they have filed against the filmmaker.

Hassan is the producer, director and star of the film, which was released abroad and in some Indian states on Jan. 25. The film has received a tremendous response in states where it has been released and has earned favorable reviews from film critics.

The film has been made in the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi languages.

It had been cleared by India's Censor Board before the Muslim groups raised objections to some scenes prompting the Tamil Nadu government's ban. That decision was followed by similar bans on the film in Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

The film is expected to be released in Tamil Nadu as early as Friday.

Online gaming ? five ways to strike a balance

Family playing video gamesStephanie Brantz has been a sports and events presenter for the ABC since 2010, following stints at both SBS?TV and Channel 9. She presents ABC TV?s summer of sport?as well as network events including the Australian of the Year and the Gallipoli dawn service on Anzac Day.??Stephanie is mother to three children ? Patrick, 18, Lewis, 13; and daughter Lindsay, 11 ? and she spends a lot of time monitoring their interests and finding out safe ways for them to participate in the online world. Stephanie is an ambassador for the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association.

When talking about internet safety, specifically in the area of online games, I always come across different opinions from parents about how to tackle the issue with their kids. Keeping your kids away from harassment or harmful and explicit content that might occur during online video games is a difficult and necessary task for parents.? Some parents choose to sit back and ignore the matter, others stop their children from using the internet altogether ? can there be a happy medium between the two? I believe so.

We all want our kids to learn about their online rights and responsibilities. Like most parents, I am very busy and, as much as I am a multi-tasker, I cannot constantly be hovering over the computer screen 24/7 watching what my kids are up to. With Safer Internet Day? around the corner, it is a timely reminder for us parents to help our children find a balance between enjoying online video games while being safe. As a veteran in this space, I thought I?d share a few simple (yet hard-learnt) tips you can use to monitor your kids and help them navigate the online world safely.

Tips #1 ? KEEP THEM CLOSE

My eldest son often downloads games that are not appropriate for my younger son or daughter to play. I keep the computer and other devices in our lounge room which is close to the kitchen and the other common areas in our house. This allows my husband and I to be close to the devices and see what they are playing, as much as possible. You would be amazed at how much a bit of parental proximity can stop the kids from doing inappropriate stuff on the computer!? Having parental controls set appropriately acts as a second line of defence here.

Tip #2 ? LAY DOWN THE LAW

I?ve found it really helpful to draw up a set of rules to demonstrate what acceptable online behaviour is, and what is not. ?For example, if you wouldn?t say it to someone when you are face to face with them, don?t say it in an online environment.? If you wouldn?t reveal your private details to a stranger in person, don?t reveal them online.

I also like the ?Grandma Rule? ? if you wouldn?t like Grandma to read it, don?t write it! This rule also works wonders in other social media environments.

Tip #3 ? SUPPORT ROLE

Although it?s hard at times, we must learn to be a supportive and positive parent, one that listens and takes on board their children?s feelings about being online. Being a tyrant won?t get you anywhere ? as I?ve found out! Although you may not have all the answers, building trust around the issues they may encounter, such as cyberbullying, is your key to success. My kids know that if they do experience any kind of negative harassment in a gaming environment, they should let me know right away, and we can deal with it together. You would be surprised how many features exist to help users manage privacy and bullying ? from parental controls and privacy settings, to the ability to flag content as inappropriate or report individuals who are engaging in negative behavior. It is a good idea to familiarilise yourself with these settings where possible.

Tip #4 ? FANTASY NAMES

I?ve found that by ensuring your kids only use nicknames, usernames or gamer tags instead of their real names, this will help keep minimal personal information about them out on the World Wide Web.

Tip #5 ? KNOW THE TERRITORY

Finally, I make sure that I familiarise myself with the sites my kids visit and only allow them to play games from reputable sites. It only takes a bit of extra time but I conduct research, reading online reviews before consenting to my kids playing a certain game. Online video games can be highly educational and social for kids; you just need to make sure they are playing the most appropriate ones for their age and maturity level and that they are aware of both their rights and responsibilities when playing. The introduction of an R18+ classification this year is a suitable reminder that there are numerous online games that cater for young and old and it is important that your kids are playing the appropriately classified games.
